SPEAKERS
 
SALLY J WALKER has been a writer, editor, and creative
writing instructor since receiving her 1985 BFA from the
University of Nebraska at Omaha. Her published books include
Letting Go of Sacred Things (The Fiction Works, 2002)
and Desert Time (The Fiction Works, 2005). Her stories are
included in the adult literacy anthology Tell Me of Love (The
Fiction Works, 2004), the adult literacy anthology The Real West (The
Fiction Works, 2004), and the forthcoming novella collections
will include To Touch to Belong, Ties That Bind, Turquois
and Feather, The Seduction of Temperance, The Lonely Man,
and Storm Maker. Her screenplay The Lonely Man placed
among the quarter-finalists in the 1998 Nicholl competition
sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Sally belongs to Western Writers of America, the Society of
Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, serves as current
President of the Nebraska Writers Guild, and has facilitated the
Nebraska Writers Workshop, a weekly study-critique group,
since 1985). Well over 2,000 Midwest writers have attended
her WRITE-NOW workshops.

Sally’s Workshop: Exercises in Poetry-to-Prose-to-Drama
 
Nebraska native SHERRY SIWINSKI is the founder and first
president of Prairieland Romance Writers, a chapter of the
Romance Writers of America. As Sherry James, she has
published over 85 magazine and newspaper articles and is
working on her sixth novel. A former book store manager that
now writes full time, Sherry enjoys riding horses and specializes
in western and cowboy romances, both contemporary and historical.
Sherry’s Presentation: Web Sites—The Best Bang for an Author’s
Promotional Buck
It’s a digital world! These days a presence in cyberspace is a must have
for anyone who wants to build their career as an author. In this
workshop Sherry will discuss domain names, hosting, the difference
between a web site and a blog, and what to include on your site.
Sherry will also discuss if you should create your site yourself or hire
out, and ways to help you reach readers around the globe without
going broke.
Sherry’s Workshop: Branding—It’s Not Just for Cattle Anymore!
In this interactive workshop Sherry will discuss what exactly a
commercial brand is, if branding is right for your career as an author,
and how to develop a brand to help you build your readership.
 
LEW HUNTER is a screenwriter, author, and educator, and is
Chairman Emeritus and Professor of Screenwriting at
the UCLA Department of Film and Television. He is recognized
as one of the best screenwriting teachers in the United States.
His former students include Alexander Payne, Robert Wolfe,
Joel Schumacher, and many others. Steven Spielberg has
called Hunter "the best screenwriting teacher going". Hunter
lives in Superior, Nebraska where he teaches seminars for
aspiring screenwriters. Every winter, he returns to UCLA to teach
his Screenwriting 434 course to graduate students in the
screenwriting MFA program, the modern form of which he
helped create. In 1998, nine of the ten top-grossing films were
written by graduates of UCLA's screenwriting MFA program.
His bestselling book on screenwriting is entitled Screenwriting
434.
A native of Nebraska, Hunter has a Bachelors degree and
honorary Doctorate from Nebraska Wesleyan University, and
has Masters degrees from Northwestern University and UCLA.
Hunter helped to found the American Screenwriters
Association and has been inducted into its Hall of Fame.
Lew’s Presentation: Naked Screenwriting: The Icons of Hollywood
and Me
Lew will discuss his interactions with well-known people in the
entertainment industry, and will share assorted tidbits to help you be a
wonderful screenwriter.
